The chapter begins with Takaba when he was still in university. He’s screaming at his friend for being late. The two of them practice for their show. However, Takaba’s friend does not remember his lines.
The friend says sorry but Takaba screams at him, looking angry. He says it seems like his friend isn’t sorry and urges that he should truly apologize. His friend gets angry as well, noting that he’s supportive of Takaba because he looks unapproachable or unfriendly.
His friend mentions that Takaba doesn’t go to the drinking parties and he doesn’t laugh at other people’s jokes. Takaba responds by saying he’ll only laugh if the jokes are actually funny. His friend then says it’s because of Takaba that their upperclassmen don’t notice them.
Takaba continues getting angry with his friend because he blames him for being late to the rehearsal. It’s noted that they don’t put out shows twice a year, plus their jokes are getting old because they get reused. Takaba then hits his friend after he asks if Takaba’s jealous due to the fact that he isn’t well-liked by women.
Takaba insists he’s just saying they should be serious about comedy. His friend says it’s not enjoyable doing comedy with him. He also asks how is the audience supposed to laugh when they themselves cannot.
In a different flashback, Takaba reads a negative comment about him. A colleague attempts to comfort him, noting it’s not possible to make everyone laugh at a joke. Another flashback shows Takaba’s friend thinking about quitting comedy. The next flashback shows Takaba alone, hoping to be a regular on shows. He feels lonely and rethinks about doing comedy.
Takaba thinks the more people know about him, the more they’ll think he’s funny. Takaba talks to his younger self, who asks why he’s even doing comedy. He reflects on his feelings surrounding comedy and himself.
Before Kenjaku could attack, Takaba bows and apologizes. He says he’ll make everyone laugh, including Kenjaku.
The series will be on break next week.
