Is There an R-Rated Cut of the FNAF Film?

The fact that Five Nights at Freddy’s was a PG-13 movie allowed Blumhouse and Universal to have a highly successful opening weekend. However, many fans have also been left wanting an R-rated cut of the film. Is there an R-rated FNAF cut available? Here’s all you need to know.

Is there an R-rated cut of the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie?

No, an R-rated cut of the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie does not exist. The movie was always intended to be PG-13.

Blumhouse went for a PG-13 FNAF film right from the beginning to get the film a widespread appeal. An R-rating limits movies to a smaller audience. So, keeping FNAF as PG-13 turned out to be the best decision as it brought in $80 million (per Box Office Mojo) on its opening weekend and $136 million worldwide. A lot of younger viewers no doubt contributed to its box office.

An opening like that made the film an instant success as it reportedly had a production budget of just $20 million. But having a teenager-friendly rating, one of the criticisms that the film got was its overreliance on jump scares and less adult-oriented horror. Hence, a lot of fans are demanding an R-rated cut of the movie. But will it ever come out?

Will Blumhouse release a Five Nights at Freddy’s R-rated cut?

As per the director, we shouldn’t expect an R-rated cut of Five Nights at Freddy’s.

Speaking with Forbes, director Emma Tammi said that FNAF will not be getting an R-rated cut anytime soon. When asked about it, she said:

“I would say not to expect an R-rated version on this one. We’re really happy with how the PG-13 tone landed; it felt like the right fit for this particular film. We’re sticking by it.”

She further talked about being aware of certain audiences wanting an R-rated cut. But ultimately, she and others at Blumhouse wanted the film “to be inclusive of the younger audiences.”

She continued:

“Of course, there are a lot of dark elements to see in the lore, but in terms of some of the kills and everything, it was just all execution dependent. We really wanted to ensure that we were showing the right amount and doing creative things to insinuate what was happening or show what was happening without fully seeing it to still fit in that PG-13 category.”

Since the film has been so successful at the box office despite getting a day-and-date release on Peacock, even its potential sequel may not be R-rated.
